How to set up Instagram comment-to-DM automation

Why comment-to-DM converts better than a link in bio

A link in your bio asks people to leave the post, find your profile, tap the link, and remember why they came. Every step loses people. Comment-to-DM does the opposite: it meets the person at the exact moment of highest intent, the second they comment, and delivers what they asked for inside the app without a single extra tap.

It also moves the conversation from a public comment thread into a private 1-to-1 DM, which is where sales, bookings, and real relationships actually happen. And because a comment is a strong engagement signal, asking for comments tends to push your post further in the algorithm at the same time. Can you do comment-to-DM natively for free?

This is the first question most people ask, so here is the honest answer before you sign up for anything. Instagram's built-in Meta Business Suite gives you a few automation crumbs, but not real comment-to-DM.

What is allowed and what is not

Meta is strict about Instagram automation, and the rules exist to protect users from spam. Follow these and your account is safe.

Rule of thumb: if a tool advertises auto-follow or mass-DM, it is operating outside the Official Meta API and your account is exposed. Stick to Official-API tools only.

Step 1: Switch to a Business or Creator account

Personal accounts cannot use any automation API. In the Instagram app, open Settings, then Account type and tools, and switch to Creator or Business. This is free and reversible at any time.

Step 2: Link a Facebook page

The Official Meta API requires your Instagram account to be linked to a Facebook page. Inside the Instagram app go to Settings, Accounts Center, and connect or create a page. It takes about 30 seconds and you never have to post on the page.

Step 3: Connect ReplyMode

Head to the login page and authorize ReplyMode via Facebook or Instagram login. The OAuth dialog shows exactly which permissions are requested. The whole flow takes about 30 seconds and uses no password sharing.

Step 4: Create a comment automation

In the dashboard, create a new comment automation and pick the post or reel it should watch. You can target a specific post or apply it to future posts, depending on the campaign.

Step 5: Choose your trigger keyword

Pick a single, easy-to-spell keyword such as LINK, GUIDE, or PRICE. Keep it short and obvious so people type it correctly. You can also trigger on any comment, but a keyword keeps the DM relevant and gives you a clean call-to-action for the caption: "comment LINK and I will send it to you."

Step 6: Write the DM

Write the message the commenter receives. Lead with the thing they asked for (the link or the answer), then add one short line of context or a next step. Templates are rule-based, so they are predictable and fast with no AI hallucinations. See the templates section below for copy you can paste.

Step 7: Test with a second account

Never go live without testing. Use a second Instagram account (your personal one works) to comment the trigger keyword on the post. Confirm the DM arrives within a second, that it lands in the inbox rather than message requests, and read it back to catch typos. Two minutes of testing prevents a public mistake.

Step 8: Publish the post and add the call-to-action

Turn the automation on, then post your content with a clear instruction in the caption and ideally said out loud in a reel: "comment LINK and I will DM it to you." The clearer the call-to-action, the more comments you get, and the more the algorithm rewards the post. Check the activity log after a few hours to watch it work.
